Railway ecology

Although there have been rapid advancements in the field of road ecology, railway ecology is a relatively new field of research and large knowledge gaps exist. Although railway impacts vary among species, train collisions are the leading cause of known mortality for several species. In collaboration with Magnetawan First Nation and Shawanaga First Nation, we aim to weave Indigenous knowledge and Western science to:

  1. Identify railway ecology research gaps,

  2. Identify wildlife-train collision hotspots of vertebrate animal species frequently killed by trains;

  3. Identify environmental factors influencing wildlife-train collision hotspots; and

  4. Suggest potential mitigation solutions to reduce wildlife-train collisions.
